Erythronium rostratum

Liliacaeae

Trout lily or dog’s tooth violet (Erythronium rostratum) is a native glabrous herbaceous bulbous perennial in the Liliaceae. The plant produces two flat leaves (one leaf in immature plants), which have parallel veins and taper to a petiole that wraps around the scape. The inflorescence is a one-flowered scape. The flowers are perfect, large, nodding, and regular, with six yellow tepals and six stamens. The ovary is superior, and the fruit is an obovoid capsule with numerous seeds. An infrequent to rare species with most populations in north Louisiana but while working at Ft Polk, I with Sara Thames (shout out to her) found a population on Ft Polk in Vernon Parish. These pictures taken there a few years ago. Also reported from Bienville, Bossier, Claiborne, Grant, Jackson, Lincoln, Natchitoches, Rapides, Sabine, Webster, West Feliciana, and Winn parishes. A second species in this genus, albidum with white flowers is reported only from Bossier and Caddo parishes.
