Abelia chinensis

Caprifoliaceae

Chinese abelia (Abelia (Linnaea) chinensis is a non-native semi-evergreen shrub in the Caprifoliaceae. It has opposite simple leaves with pinnate major veins. I know it is not native but it is by far right now my best butterfly nectar plant. I see 4-5 swallowtails plus 3-4 silver spotted skippers almost every time that I walk by my large Chinese abelia. And right at dark and shortly after, a number of the hummingbird moths visit these flowers. I am of the opinion that nectar for butterflies can come from any source even sugar water but for the caterpillars, native plants are a lot more necessary. In the early 2000’s I visited botanic gardens in North Carolina and they had this plant just covered with butterflies. I searched and finally found some and planted them on Allen Acres. It is easily rooted from cuttings and thus I now have more and have given away several plants. I grew up with an Abelia outside the front door that had white flowers and only seemed to attract bees. That species seems to be Abelia grandiflora but there are some cultivars of this species with pink in the flowers like “Edward Goucher” and it is also a good butterfly nectar plant and thus some planted at Allen Acres.
